Interface
Two liquids that do not mix, a layer of sludge, a phase inversion, a conductive organic phase. The probe follows the separation layer in the pipe after the outlet valve, and the batch separates without an operator.

01 — Applications
Three measurements, one principle: read the medium, not the instrument.
The probe reads a change of impedance, or of reflected light. What changes is the process around it: two liquids, a foam layer, a powder, a sterile vessel.
Each door below opens on the same question. What does the medium do, and what does the plant need to see?

Limit value
Foam in a fermenter, powder in a silo, liquid in a tank. The switch monitors the static or dynamic limit and regulates the antifoam feed; the same probe stands at the bottom-loading arm to keep the operator out of the product.

Level and turbidity
Level in glass apparatus, in a sump, in a storage tank, from liquefied gas at -260 °C to a process at 400 °C. Turbidity in a fermentation broth, a filtration train, a condensate.
02 — The probe
The probe is the instrument.
A probe is dimensioned for one process. Active and inactive length, material, connection and head are chosen together, because the measurement depends on what the medium touches.
Custom probes are programmed to the process properties and the media used. The evaluation electronics sit behind them: mipromex for impedance, turbymex for light.

03 — What holds
Forty-four years, one building.
Development, prototype and serial production under the same roof since 2007, in the glass building at Hauptstrasse 22. That is what allows a probe to be dimensioned for a single process and still be certified.

04 — The house
One family, two trades.
Roger Inauen runs production, Thomas Inauen runs sales and finance. They took over on 8 April 2017, the thirty-fifth anniversary, from their father Roland Inauen, who founded the company in 1982 and remains chairman of the board.
Two trades under one name: the chemistry of the measurement and the machining of the probe.

05 — Where they measure
Five industries, four continents.
Agents in seventeen countries and territories, from Brazil to New Zealand, with direct sales where the customer needs an engineer more than a catalogue.
Since 2022 Aquasant employs its own staff in China with sim (selective international management) Co. Ltd in Shanghai, because its international customers in chemicals and pharmaceuticals produce there.

Two movements are under way at the same time.
The lines that grow fastest in pharmaceutical production are the ones where the sensor sits inside the vessel: cell density in a fermenter, turbidity in a filtration train, an interface inside a decanter. They are read without contact with the product, cleaned and sterilised in place at 230 °C — ground Aquasant has worked since the 1980s, now the rule rather than the exception.
And the instrument is leaving the analogue world. Since September 2026, a browser application at aquasant-oss.ch parameterises and updates AS2 controllers and AME-I field devices. No page of the website mentions it.
From a probe workshop to a device platform, the distance is short on the drawing board and long in the organisation. A catalogue sold through agents on four continents does not carry software; software needs the plant that runs it.
The next decision is not whether Aquasant can make the next probe. It is whether the next probe is still sold as a probe.
